Dr. Cheryl Martin

Dr. Cheryl Martin

ARPA-E is pleased to welcome Dr. Cheryl Martin, a distinguished industry professional, as its new Deputy Director for Commercialization. Dr. Martin’s is leading our programs to help breakthrough energy technologies succeed in the marketplace.

Previously, Dr. Martin was an Executive in Residence with Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers and prior to that she was with the Rohm and Haas Company for 20 years. Dr. Martin held several positions at Rohm and Haas, ultimately serving as the General Manager for Paint and Coatings Materials in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Dr. Martin earned a B.A. in Chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is active in the American Chemical Society (ACS) at both the local and national levels and serves on the Board of Directors for Philabundance, the greater Philadelphia region’s largest hunger relief organization.

Gates, Smith, and Scott to speak at ARPA-E Summit, Feb. 27-29, 2012

Dr. Arun Majumdar & Secretary ChuARPA-E’s Director, Dr. Arun Majumdar recently announced that the third annual ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit will be held from February 27 – 29, 2012 at the Gaylord Convention Center just outside Washington, D.C. Now in its third year, the Summit is designed to unite key players from all sectors of the nation’s energy innovation community to share ideas for developing and deploying the next generation of clean energy technologies. Last year’s annual ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit attracted more than 90 speakers and 2,000 attendees from 49 states and 20 countries.

Program Highlights Include:

  • Keynote Addresses by:
    • Dr. Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy
    • Dr. Arun Majumdar, ARPA-E Director
    • Mr. Bill Gates, Founder and Chairman of Microsoft
    • Mr. Fred Smith, Chairman, President and CEO of FedEx

Five ARPA-E Projects Attract Over $100 Million of Private Capital

Vice President Joe BidenWhile speaking at the National Clean Energy Summit 4.0 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Vice President Joe Biden announced another promising milestone for ARPA-E: five more innovative companies that were awarded ARPA-E funding in 2009 and 2010 have now attracted more than $100 million in outside private capital investment. This is in addition to six other companies highlighted by Secretary Chu in February that have also attracted more than $100 million in private financing based on the progress of their work. The White House also released a report on the United States’ position in the global clean energy race.
